Smethwick At War
Here's a must on welovebearwood's calendar of events for next month.
Smethwick Heritage Centre's Smethwick At War Roadshow is coming to St Mary’s Church on 10th November. You'll be able to find out more about what life was like living in Bearwood during World War II.
Chris Sutton’s book, “From Smethwick to St Nazaire – the Life of Bill Savage VC" will also be launched at the roadshow. Bill Savage originated from Smethwick and was awarded the Victoria Cross, for his gallantry during World War II.
The Mayor will be opening the Roadshow with a memorial service organised by the British Legion.

My Grandfather Arthur Merriman was an Auxiliary Fireman based at The Cape Hill Brewery during World War II and would put out the incendiaries and fire bombs dropped on the vital munitions and war-work factories around Smethwick, Ladywood and Winson Green at night while his family took refuge in their Anderson Shelter in their house in Poplar Road in Bearwood, Smethwick.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith B. Your grandfather sounds amazing - we would love to know more about him.
